Facial scars resulting from trauma, burns, acne or prior surgery
can be devastating. Even the slightest scar on the face can be visible
because of its apparent location and most individuals are very self
conscious of facial scars.
The objective in treatment of scars is to make them less visible.
This can be achieved using a number of techniques of repositioning
and/or camouflage. Raised scars can be made more flush with the
skin using injections of steroids, dermabrasion of the scar or laser
techniques. Depressed scars can be filled from below using a variety
of biocompatible materials or can be removed and replaced with healthy
local skin. Occasionally, camouflaging techniques are used to change
the orientation of the scar to make it less noticeable. Techniques
of Z-plasty, W-plasty, and geometric broken line closure can be
discussed during your consultation.
After your scar treatment, you may have some discomfort which
is well controlled with prescribed medication. You may be asked
to take antibiotics, apply antibiotic creams and often will need
to massage the area as it is healing. Recently available ointments
that help heal the wounds with less redness and swelling may also
be recommended.
Using this variety of techniques, singly or as a series of different
treatments, will help to soften scars and make them less visible.
It is important to remember that scars take several months to "mature"
and for maximal improvement in appearance to be achieved.
